The recent (and fantastic) The Green Book revisited a little-known aspect of segregation: the restrictions on movement of Afro-Americans. Wonderfully produced, this immersive documentary expands on the topic while also revealing its frightening contemporary echo.

Based on the traveling guide The Green Book, this documentary draws a timeline between 1950s segregationist laws and current police violence in the US. Traveling While Black invites viewers into Ben’s Chili Bowl, in Washington, and gives the floor to the restaurant’s owner, Virginia Ali, as well as Courtland Cox, a civil rights’ leader who talks about the long history of race-related violence.
