This year, GIFF’s international Features Competition includes Nina Wu, a movie by Midi Z. The talented Taiwanese moviemaker made the most of the shooting of his film to create, at the same time, this intriguing Making of, in the form of a virtual mise en abyme of cinema and its tricks. Dizzying!
While borrowing from the codes of the metaphysical “film-within-a-film” genre, Taiwanese moviemaker Midi Z uses VR to film what happens behind the scenes of the shooting of Nina Wu (a film featured in the international features competition). The 360-degree VR camera enables viewers to see the actors that play in the film as well as the team shooting the scene. The moviemaker produces a documentary for himself and succeeds in perfectly representing the shooting of a film.
