It all began with a ghost story read in a book and forced exile to the countryside. From this twofold source of inspiration, Tsai Ming-liang has drawn an immersive and metaphysical film-poem whose Director’s Cut GIFF will screen.
On reservation only. One person per hour.
The first movie in virtual reality of Taiwanese moviemaker Tsai Ming-liang tells the story of a man recovering after an illness, living in a house in ruins in the mountains. The movie’s Chinese title, 家在蘭若寺, translates as “The House of the Temple of Lan Re” and is based on a ghost story drawn from a famous collection of Chinese tales. This short 55-minute long feature, features the moviemaker’s favorite esthetics and style. Through long shots focusing on characters and environments, we are led to contemplate the solitary existence of this man, and left free to interpret the meaning of the movie to our liking. A unique and fascinating experience.
