An unlikely starting point: a young Japanese dropout prostitutes his mentally handicapped sister in order to survive. On this seemingly immoral canvas, Shinzo Katayama weaves a movie that upturns taboos, touches the heart as well as the soul, and radiates intelligence.

There’s crudeness but no provocation in this movie which actually features a humanist outlook on a brother and his mentally handicapped sister. In this striking first movie, taboo topics are tackled, e.g. sexuality, pleasure, prostitution and mental illness. The moviemaker holds up a mirror as if to help us better reflect on these sensitive topics and to reconsider our perspective with a subtle and remarkable approach.
