It required all of Xavier Dolan’s boldness to gather together Nathalie Baye, Vincent Cassel, Léa Seydoux, Gaspard Ulliel and Marion Cotillard in this family drama behind closed doors, where the moviemaker juggles with the neuroses and catharses of his characters with an innate sense of imbalance. Perfect, until the very end.
“Without music, life would be a mistake, a fatigue, an exile,” wrote Friedrich Nietzsche. For Xavier Dolan, music is an obsession, and we love that. For the soundtrack, he calls upon Gabriel Yared again and also invites Camille, Moby and Lost Frequencies. Based on the play It’s Only the End of the World by Jean-Luc Lagarce written in 1990, this movie features a family’s madness and their cracks, filmed behind closed doors, and played by actors who are simply perfect.
