GIFF AND LOCARNO FILM FESTIVAL JOIN FORCES AGAIN! 

Throughout the 77th Locarno Film Festival (August 7-17, 2024), the Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF) will be co-presenting a double selection of experiences at the cutting edge of contemporary immersive storytelling, free of charge. The program will be presented in the Cabina, the former projection booth at the Piazza Grande, as well as in the showroom of BaseCamp PopUp, a creative hub dedicated to the next generation of filmmakers.

The program includes the fourth episode of the Hors-Cadre series, which explores the life and work of Paul Klee through his famous puppets, as well as Underneath the Wings of a Butterfly, an augmented-reality installation that invites us to follow a digital butterfly in an image pileup that atomizes the aesthetics of contemporary consumerist society.

The project, which is entirely free and open to the public, is part of the Festival’s annual traveling program, GIFF Unlimited.

With the help of a precise and faithful reproduction of the puppets that Paul Klee made for his son, this fourth episode of the virtual reality series Hors-Cadre sets out to discover the many facets of the artist and his work. Part fiction, part documentary, the puppets themselves recount the major events and important aspects of his career and life. From his difficult artistic beginnings to his position as a professor at the Bauhaus, to the rise of Nazism, the experience offers a new look at the artist, his practice and his history.

Abner Preis explores in his works the possibilities offered by immersive technologies to create compelling visual universes and narratives. He offers here a playful and eccentric augmented reality experience that addresses the issue of collective survival. Between the beautiful and the abundant, multiple threats of collapse and crisis emerge. Guided by a digital butterfly, the public is invited to explore the breaches and paths of resistance for a collective and joyful survival.
