Avatars, cam-girls, cyberfeminism

In her work Syntia_CAM, presented at GIFF 2023, artist Ludovica Galleani d'Agliano produces avatars (virtual images and identities) based on the narratives of sex workers, in particular cam-girls. What is the relationship between technology, sex, gender and the production of images and audiovisual content? How does interaction design allow us to imagine sex work differently? How do subjectivities interact with digital space and the images it creates? When and in what ways do reality and fiction merge, creating new imaginaries and images? How do new technologies and images enable a form of emancipation and reappropriation of bodies, genders and sexualities, particularly for women and sex workers? What alternative content, data or narratives do digital works have the potential to generate around issues of sexuality?
This discussion co-organized with the University of Geneva's Centre Maurice Chalumeau en sciences des sexualités (CMCSS) will question notions of representations, images and imaginaries in virtual space, digital identities, avatars and their subversive, emancipatory and empowering potential, from a feminist and post-cyberfeminist perspective.
