Who would have thought that a simple tweet from Ricky Gervais would spark a gritty satire on the world of television in Germany? A meta-comedy packed with self-deprecation and surprises.
In German Genius, as in real life, Kida Khodr Ramadan owes his reputation to his memorable performance in the crime drama 4 Blocks, in which he plays the leader of a Berlin drug cartel. Hoping to distance himself from this part of his career, the on-screen Kida dreams of creating a more personal series. When Kida receives a flattering tweet from the legendary British comic Ricky Gervais, he uses this to convince him to give him the rights to the German adaptation of his series Extras. But in a country with few celebrities, and not known for its sense of humor, the creator misses no opportunity to mock – with clear affection – the world of German television.
