A businessman, his wife, 1940, Kobe, Japan at war. Against this romantic backdrop, Kiyoshi Kurosawa weaves a paranoid and elegant thriller about false appearances (i.e. cinema), which earned him the Silver Bear for Best Director at the last Venice Film Festival.

The leading filmmaker of a generation that followed the Japanese New Wave, Kiyoshi Kurosawa has made B series, ghost movies and Pinku-eiga (pink cinema) for Nikkatsu productions. Impetuous, he continues his explorations with his first period film, co-written with Ryusuke Hamaguchi, director of Asako I & II. Flashback. We are in Kobe in 1940 with sacrificed lovers, on the eve of the war. What has become of Japan?
