An ageing former yakuza comes out of prison. From rotten jobs to everyday humiliations, he seeks to tame his impulsive nature and live the cruel experience of banality. A bittersweet chronicle of life after prison, carried at tattooed arm's length by the invaluable Kōji Yakusho.

Novelist Miwa Nishikawa came to cinema by first working with Kore-eda. This adaptation of a book by Ryūzō Saki marks the return of Kōji Yakusho, seen in The Eel and Eureka. Remarkable, he embodies here the sorrows of a yakuza, a solitary bird freshly freed from a long sentence. The setbacks of a man who, braving taboos, turns his destiny upside down. A humorous film about the scars of life, and redemption.
