USSR, 1962. A member of the Party, Ludmila reacts harshly when workers at the local power plant go on strike. Her daughter is in the crowd. Moscow says to send in the army. A moving fresco and a Special Jury Prize winner at the last Venice Mostra about a massacre that has long since remained secret.

Konchalovsky is an uncategorizable filmmaker. Pioneer of the New Wave, celebrated then banned by the Soviet authorities, he was 25 when the Novotcherkassk massacre took place on June 2, 1962. In a brutal repression ordered by First Secretary Nikita Khrushchev, the army fired on strikers. Through the eyes of a woman, as in a Greek tragedy, the worst happens. These classified events were only revealed in 1990.
