With The Handmaiden, which captivated the Cannes Film Festival in 2016, Park Chan-wook shows the full extent of his talent. A baroque and visionary director, he manages like no one else can, to translate into deceptive images a story full of traps and subterfuge. Masterful!

Korea, the 1930s, under Japanese rule. A young woman becomes the servant of a wealthy Japanese heiress. Secretly, she plots a fraudulent act with her stooge. Park Chan-wook’s cinema has touches of baroque, mirror effects and pitfalls which border on the sublime here, and which underpin the movie, turning manipulation (of the audience, the characters, etc.) into the subject of the story itself rather than a narrative tool.
