It was the announcement of 2014: at the age of 25, Xavier Dolan would finally have the honor of taking part in the competition at the Cannes Film Festival, and quite rightly so: With Mommy, the virtuoso has turned into a master. The work captivates audiences with its self-assurance, its clarity and its capacity to express extreme emotions through images.
Half-melodrama, half-comedy, Mommy is an actresses and an actors’ movie, and much more. It’s a beautiful declaration of love of course, a dark comedy that doesn’t unfold in the real world but in a country where parents are authorized to abandon their children. This fifth feature, selected for the official competition in Cannes in 2014, received great acclaim as well as the Jury’s Prize, together with Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye to Language.
