Cannes, 2009. The Directors’ Fortnight screened the first movie of a young, 19-year-old French Canadian filmmaker. With I Killed my Mother, a wildly virtuoso film, Xavier Dolan’s name appeared in golden letters on the retinas of all movie buffs on the planet.

“I’m guided by a sentence by Paul Valéry: The wind is rising, we must try to live! I wrote the scenario over three days, just after quitting school, full of grievances against my mother. It helped me let off steam, it was cathartic. I wrote it like a vindictive letter you’d write to someone without ever sending it.” A kid born into show business, Xavier Dolan had just turned 19 when he made his first movie, acclaimed at the Cannes Film Festival.
