A second movie and a second uppercut to the face of Cannes’ festivalgoers, Heartbeats confirms that Xavier Dolan is well and truly the most fascinating movie director of his generation. Tangy esthetics, an incredibly beautiful cast and an awesome soundtrack: every shot here is cinema.

One year after I Killed my Mother, Xavier Dolan returns to Cannes with a bang, and it’s no accident. “I think it’s a young adult’s movie”, says Dolan. In a more comic vein, the movie features an electric, pop and poetic lovers’ chase. The melancholy soundtrack features an eclectic mix of Dalida, Indochine, The Knife, and J.S. Bach. Irresistible, charming, brilliant. Reminiscent of Roland Barthes, Alfred de Musset and Jules et Jim.
