It was the big thing at the Venice Film Festival: Roman Polanski revisiting the Dreyfus affair. Since then, the controversy has faded in favor of the movie and its tandem Jean Dujardin/Louis Garrel. The result? Often addressed in cinema, the affair has never been better analyzed than here. Pure manipulation, expressed on film.
“I have but one passion, the passion for light”, wrote Emile Zola in the conclusion to his open letter J'accuse, published on the first page of newspaper L’Aurore. For twelve years, the Dreyfus affair divided France. Investigating officer Colonel Picquart would discover the anti-Semitism that corrupted the military hierarchy in the 19th century. A forgotten hero, brilliantly played by Jean Dujardin, he would then have to fight for the truth. An ode to courage. Brilliant.
